Located on the NE corner of Tobago, Speyside is an old fishing
village that now hosts a number of world class, advanced dive
sites. Speyside is famous for Manta Rays, Black Tip Reef
Sharks, Green Sea Turtles, and a variety of other aquatic
species. Most of the dive sites near Speyside are "drift
dives", currents vary and can be strong, not recommended for a
novice diver. The conditions were not ideal . . . It was
raining - tropical storm type rain and had been the two days
prior to my arrival.
I
prayed for sun for the Fourth of July and was blessed with a
beautiful Sunrise, followed by a nice day of diving. As I
said conditions were not ideal, most of the large species I was
hoping to see were absent, but it was a great day. The weather
returned to rain in the evening . . . it is the "Wet Season" in
Trinidad & Tobago June - Dec.
The
islands in the distance are "Little Tobago", Goat Island and a
few other unnamed islands. The house located on Goat
Island was once owned by Ian Flemming and he wrote much of the
original James Bond books from that location. It's rumored
that some early Bond footage was shot on Goat Island and
in the surrounding waters.
I
made two dives on the Fourth of July, 2009. The first dive
was on the back side of "Little Tobago" - 70' drift dive -
"Coral Gardens" and home to the largest known Brain Coral in the
world. The second dive - "Goat Island Dream" begins
adjacent to the Flemming property, another drift/strong current
dive 50' along the far side of Goat Island, then you shoot
through a crack in the coral and come out the other side before
the current takes you out to sea. All of us made it
safely, what a cool dive, So much to do in so little time,
requires another day.
